Interests besides sports: history, ranching, oil, children, grandchildren, Red Heelers, Japanese food.

Favorite music: Dixie Chicks, Old Crow Medicine Show, Robert Earl Keen, Springsteen (not necessarily in that order)

I WANTED TO BE A SPORTS WRITER WHEN: my dad took me to my first big-league game and I asked him: “Who are those men moving around in the deck above us?” . . .

“They’re sports writers, writing about this game.” . . . “They make a living doing that?” . . . . “Not a great living, but yeah, that’s what they do.”

Football background: have attended approximately 100 Longhorns football games.

Made first football picks: in the sixth grade, when I tried to beat my dad and friends.

Proudest prognosticating: Since 2003 I have picked every college football champion correctly with the exception of Alabama in 2009.

Education: Junior at The University of Texas at Austin. Previously attended University of Texas at San Antonio.

Why I’m qualified: I have a similar perspective as the college football players, being a student, like they are, who’s barely an adult.

Interests besides sports: Hunting, Golfing (I guess you can consider those sports, but the way I do them . . .), reading good fiction

Favorite TV shows: Game of Thrones, The Newsroom

Favorite Movies: Remember the Titans, Saving Private Ryan, Good Morning Vietnam

Favorite music: Pretty much anything that isn’t country. Favorites range from Slightly Stoopid to Steely Dan

I WANTED TO BE A SPORTS WRITER WHEN: I managed the sports section for my high school newspaper. I knew then that sports reporting was what I would like to do for a living.
